The Room

The star of the movie The Room, Tommy Wiseau is not the average actor. Because, not only did he play the main character of the movie, he wrote the script and funded, produced, and directed The Room. This movie first drew my attention when I saw a little segment on the national news talking about it. The people who were interviewed called this movie, "The best, worst movie ever made." Just the idea that a movie could be so, terribly bad that it becomes good intrigued me so I decided to check it out. I was also intrigued by the cult following of this movie. Many people will follow this movie from screening to screening quoting the lines and dressing up as the characters. However, they don't follow the movie because it's good. They follow the movie, laugh at the most dramatic parts, throw plastic spoons and forks at the screen, and they do this all in front of the mastermind the created this movie. Tommy Wiseau attends many of the screenings and has to sit there and watch his movie get torn to shreds by the audience. But no matter how good they think the movie is, the public has gained a great deal of interest in this movie and even attention for the wrong reasons is better than no attention at all.
So, I'll begin by talking about what makes this movie so bad. Here's why the movie was so terrible: the acting, the script, the filming, the editing, and finally, the plot!
The actors are terrible to begin with. They sounds bored throughout the entire film, even during the countless sex scenes (which by the way are the stupidest, most boring scenes I've ever had the misfortune to witness). They walk around, looking clueless, reciting their pointless lines, and putting emphasis on all the wrong words. But it's not like they had much to work with. The script was absolutely horrendous. The lines made no sense half the time and it made the characters sound like they were completely stupid. It's like every time the main female character, Lisa, began to talk, she would say the exact same lines, "But I don't love Johnny anymore. I love Mark. But I don't want to talk about it." It was okay, maybe the first five times, but by the end of the movie I was ready to stand up and scream, "Okay, we get it! Shut up now!" And every time a character saw another character they would always address each other by their names, even if they had just seen each other. For example, Johnny (the main character) is hanging out with his best friend Mark. Then they meet each other a few minutes later on the roof and they say,, "Hey Johnny!", "Hey, Mark!" It's not like that's a really bad line, but it's just so unrealistic it wasn't even funny.
And on top of everything, it was impossible to follow the timeline of the story. Whenever the director decided to cut scenes, all of the characters would just walk off screen and then the next scene would start. There was no break or flash in between that. And to make it even more confusing, the characters would enter a room and stay for about two minutes and then say they had to leave. It made keeping track of time impossible. (As did the goofs in the script and wardrobe where characters would leave then magically appear in the next scene wearing clothes that they had been wearing about two or three scenes before. This did actually happen in the film. The mom of the main female character, Lisa, leaves the house and then reappears in the next scene wearing clothes from a few scenes before. It's impossible to tell whether this was a goof or if the scene is taking place later in the movie.)
And just so everybody reading this knows, Tommy Wiseau has to be the worst actor to ever walk the earth. He couldn't even read his lines correctly. He emphasized the wrong words, made the stupidest faces and noises, and for some reason his words were out of sync with the movement of his lips but he was the only one in the movie like that.
HOWEVER, this movie was actually pretty incredible. Despite how amazingly stupid it was, I really enjoyed watching it. The plot wasn't the worst ever written, it was just poorly executed. And that actually made for some pretty hilarious scenes. The way Wiseau said his lines made even the most serious scenes laughable and then the scenes that were actually trying to be funny were even more hilarious. (I mean, just look at the picture of him and imagine him shirtless, in a sex scene with a pretty young eighteen year old, creepy and hilarious all at the same time, right?)
The Room is probably the worst movie ever made. Everything about it was just incredibly stupid, but it is really worth the time it takes to watch. I truly enjoyed myself watching this movie and I plan to see it again. You will either love this movie or you will hate this movie, there is absolutely no in between. But no matter how you feel about this movie, you will always remember it!
